Running since 1989, the Bénéteau Cup in Cowes is the holy grail of Bénéteau sailors and owners whose cruising and racing yachts originate from the most successful boat builder in the world.
There are many 'Bénéteau Cups' held around the world for owners, but the UK Cowes event was the first, is by far the biggest, and set to keep growing.
The regatta attracts a full range of sailing and racing abilities, from crack crews in Class A's IRC division through the Class B "Handicap Nationale" cruiser racers, to Class C's family rally enthusiasts who get to pursue a Treasure Hunt on their first day at the event. Apart from this attraction, there are 3 days of full on racing courses in the Solent, managed by the more than experienced Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. Classes are usually split in two according to their ratings to give fair racing to all.
Each year the event hosts a great themed party night, which often involves fancy dress and therefore plenty of opportunity for ‘self-expression'! – party animals should expect a late night…
Recommended for:
All abilities and experience. In particular this event offers a great introduction for beginners, it is sure to get them hooked on the sport. Experienced racers should use this event as an opportunity to enjoy some low-pressure, relaxed but still competitive sailing and socialising in convivial company.
Beneteau Cup report - posted 21st August 2007 http://www.beneteaucup.co.uk/press_releases.html
The 2007 Bénéteau Cup was dominated convincingly by new Bénéteau 40.7 Addiction helmed by Ian Handley, and a team hand-picked from friends and family by skipper Paul Jenkins of charter group Activ Power and Sail. 55 Beneteaus came to the event, held in Cowes over the 3 days of 17th - 19th August. This ubiquitous class, from the world's largest boat builder, encompassed everything from the out-and-out racer to the 2-person 21ft Bénéteau 210. Despite losing a number of the 40.7s to the Fastnet Race (much to the regret of some!) this model dominated the battle in Class A. Addiction managed to see off their closest rival Tim Spalding's Love Shack, winner of 2 races, by gaining three 1sts, a 2nd and 4th.
